ASHRAE Recognizes Outstanding Achievements

Sixty people were recognized for their contributions to ASHRAE and the building industry during ASHRAE’s 2012 Annual Conference, held June 23-27 in San Antonio.

The Louise and Bill Holladay Distinguished Fellow Award, given to an ASHRAE fellow for “continuous preeminence in engineering or research work,” was awarded to Stanley A. Mumma, PhD, PE, professor emeritus, Department of Architectural Engineering, College of Engineering, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pa.

The Exceptional Service Award, recognizing Distinguished Award recipients “who have continued to serve the Society faithfully and with exemplary effort,” was given to:

The ASHRAE Poster Presentation Award, recognizing peer-reviewed technical papers with the best visual and technical information presented at Society meetings, was given to Charles Eley, FAIA, PE, principal, Eley Consulting, San Francisco; Kimberly Goodrich, consultant, Arup, San Francisco; John J. Arent, PE, senior engineer, Architectural Energy Corp., San Francisco; and Randall T. The Crosby Field Award, recognizing the best paper presented before the Society in 2011, was given to Jacob L. Edmondson, mechanical engineer in training, GPM Engineering, San Antonio; Dennis L. O’Neal, PhD, PE, associate dean for research, Dwight Look College of Engineering, Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas; John A. Bryant, PhD, PE, associate professor, Mechanical Engineering Program, Texas A&M University at Qatar, Doha, Qatar; and Michael A. Davis, PhD, director of laboratories, New York University Abu Dhabi, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, for “Performance of Series Fan-Powered Terminal Units With Electronically Commutated Motors.”

The Willis H. Carrier Award, recognizing an ASHRAE member 32 years of age or younger for presenting an outstanding paper at a Society meeting, was given to Jacob L. Edmondson.

ASHRAE Technical Paper awards, which recognize the best papers presented at Society meetings, were presented to:

• Jacob L. Edmondson; Dennis L. O’Neal, PhD, PE; John A. Bryant, PhD, PE; and Michael A. Davis, PhD, for “Performance of Parallel Fan-Powered Terminal Units With Electronically Commutated Motors.”

• Kris Subbarao, PhD, senior engineer, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Richland, Wash.; Yafeng Lei, PhD, senior project engineer, Nextant Inc., Houston; and T. Agami Reddy, PhD, PE, SRP professor of energy and environment with joint faculty appointment in the Design School and the School of Sustainability, Arizona State University, for “The Nearest Neighborhood Method to Improve Uncertainty Estimates in Statistical Building Energy Models.”

• William M. Healy, PhD, group leader, and Tania Ullah, mechanical engineer, National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Gaithersburg, Md., and John Roller, senior undergraduate student, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Va., for “Input-Out Approach to Predicting the Energy Efficiency of Residential Water Heaters—Testing of Gas Tankless and Electric Storage Water Heaters.”

The Lincoln Bouillon Award, recognizing the member “who performs the most outstanding work in increasing the membership of the Society during the course of the year,” was presented to Dave B. Farala, PE, president, Chem-Perts Corp., Mandaluyong City, Philippines.

The Chapter Program Star Award, recognizing “excellence in chapter program endeavors,” was awarded to Marco Ottavino, account manager, modernization and retrofit sales, Honeywell Building Solutions, Markham, Ontario, Canada.

The William J. Collins Jr. Research Promotion Award, given to the chapter research-promotion chair who raises the most money for ASHRAE research, was presented to Nicolas Lemire, principal and vice president, Pageau Morel and Associates, Montreal.

The Lou Flagg Historical Award, recognizing a chapter Gold Ribbon Award winner for compiling information on outstanding historical projects or persons related to HVACR, was presented to Philip C.H. Yu, PhD, PE, C.Eng., director, Asia Pacific, Environmental and Applications Engineering, Trane Pacific, Quarry Bay, Hong Kong.

The Environmental Health Award, which recognizes excellence in volunteer service focused on environmental-health issues, was awarded to Steven J. Emmerich, engineer, NIST.

The Homer Addams Award, which honors a graduate student who has been engaged in an ASHRAE research project, was presented to Harrison M. Skye, PhD, research engineer, HVAC&R Equipment Group, NIST.

The Ralph G. Nevins Physiology and Human Environment Award, which is given to a researcher under the age of 40 for significant accomplishments in the study of bioenvironmental engineering and its effect on human comfort and health, was presented to Lily M. Wang, PhD, PE.

The Standards Achievement Award, which recognizes “significant and exceptional service in the area of standards leadership and technical contribution,” was presented to Steven T. Taylor, PE.
