Melink Wins 2012 AHR Expo Product of the Year Award

Melink Corp.'s Intelli-Hood controls for commercial kitchen hoods, which reduce exhaust- and makeup-fan speeds during idle, non-cooking conditions, providing fan energy savings of up to 90 percent and conditioned-air savings of up to 50 percent, were named Product of the Year during the 2012 International Air-Conditioning, Heating, Refrigerating Exposition (AHR Expo), held Jan. 23-25 in Chicago.

Melink, the Milford, Ohio-based provider of building commissioning services, kitchen ventilation controls, and solar-photovoltaic systems, was selected from among the 10 2012 AHR Expo Innovation Award recipients (see News & Notes, December 2011, http://bit.ly/AHR_Awards).

Sponsored by ASHRAE, the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute, and International Exposition Co., the awards program recognizes the most innovative and useful products among the thousands on display at the AHR Expo. Entries are judged on the basis of innovative design, application, market impact, and value to the HVACR industry.

“Twenty years ago, when we first pioneered demand ventilation controls, there was very little interest in saving energy,” Steve Melink, president of Melink Corp., said. “Fortunately, over time, the market caught up with technology, and the building industry learned to embrace energy efficiency.”

ASHRAE Seeking Papers for 2013 Winter Conference

ASHRAE is accepting proposals for papers for its 2013 Winter Conference, to be held Jan. 26-30 in Dallas.

The conference's technical program will consist of the following tracks: HVACR Systems and Equipment; HVACR Fundamentals and Applications; Standards, Guidelines and Codes; Energy Conservation; Refrigeration; Large Building Design; Facility Management: Operations, Technology and Energy Improvements; and Special Interest.

ASHRAE accepts two types of papers:

• Conference papers, which have an eight-single-spaced-page maximum length, are submitted as a PDF, and undergo a single-blind review. Abstracts of no more than 400 words are due by March 19. After acceptance, papers will be due by July 9.

• Full technical papers, which have a 30-double-spaced-page maximum length and undergo a rigorous double-blind review. Papers are due by April 16.

Xylem's System Syzer Tool Available as Free Mobile App

Water-technology provider Xylem Inc.'s popular Bell & Gossett System Syzer tool for calculating flow rate and pressure drop in piping systems is now available as a free mobile application for iPhone and iPad.

System Syzer can calculate friction loss and velocity through various types and sizes of pipe based on existing fluid conditions, as well as the relationship between fluid temperature, system flow, and heating/cooling load. One tool shows the relationship between U.S. flow coefficient, flow, and head and accounts for fluid properties, while others view the relationship between pipe length, friction loss, and total head loss and help to predetermine valve settings and determine flow through valves based on pressure-drop readings.

The mobile app is based on the plastic wheel calculator designed by Bell & Gossett's Gil Carlson, widely recognized as the “father of modern hydronics,” which has been distributed to more than 100,000 engineers and tradesmen since its introduction in 1963.
