A/E Firms Still Planning for Mergers/Acquisitions Activity
Seventy-one percent of architecture, engineering, and environmental consulting firms plan to conduct a merger or acquisition in the next five years, according to “2009 Merger & Acquisition Survey of Architecture, Engineering, Planning & Environmental Consulting Firms,” a recent study by ZweigWhite, a source of business-management services for architecture, engineering, and environmental-consulting firms. Promises of geographic expansion and adding new clients are motivating potential buyers to grow through acquisition, the survey found. With firm valuations down from their pre-recession highs and firm owners of the baby-boom generation nearing retirement age, many firms are finding that this is an opportune time to buy. [MORE]
EGB Now Part of HVACR Week!
HPAC Engineering's Engineering Green Buildings Conference & Expo, along with HVAC Comfortech and the new Commercial HVACR Symposium, will be part of the first annual HVACR Week, which will be held September 21-26 at the Nashville Convention Center in Nashville, Tenn.

This new mega-event will cover the gamut of the HVACR industry under one roof: from design to installation to maintenance and service.

HVACR Week 2009 brings together three events to create a single, comprehensive industry expo. Residential and commercial HVACR contractors will team with designing/specifying engineers to learn about the latest trends in the industry and the best business-improvement tactics. Plus, the top manufacturers and industry suppliers will be on hand to show off their latest products and services.

EGB – Energy Efficiency for Greener Non-Residential Buildings

Produced and managed by HPAC Engineering, the Engineering Green Buildings Conference & Expo is the only green-design event focused on green engineering applications as they apply to mechanical systems for commercial, industrial, institutional, and government buildings.

EGB 2009 – the sixth annual Engineering Green Buildings Conference & Expo – will offer technical sessions on green design and energy savings for non-residential buildings, with an emphasis on government, school/university and health-care applications. Attendees will discover how they can design greener, more-energy-efficient mechanical systems that save energy and money and reduce the carbon footprint of the buildings they serve. Stay tuned for more details.

How Does Your Data Center Measure Up?
By PAUL MATHEW, PhD, STEVE GREENBERG, PE, SRIRUPA GANGULY, DALE SARTOR, PE, and WILLIAM TSCHUDI, PE, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Berkeley, Calif.

Data centers are among the most energy-intensive types of facilities, and they are growing dramatically in terms of size and energy intensity.1 As a result, there has been increasing interest on the part of stakeholders—ranging from data-center managers to policymakers—over the last few years to improve data-center energy efficiency. Several industry and government organizations have developed tools, guidelines, and training programs to help work toward this goal. [MORE]

High-efficiency boilers
Bryan Steam's HE-AB series of forced-draft, gas-fired "flexible watertube" water boilers features efficiency of 85 percent. The high combustion efficiency results from an integrated extended-surface heat extractor, which is supported by 7 sq ft of heating surface per boiler horsepower. The boilers operate at normal operating temperatures and without the challenges of special venting or condensing material. The boilers are available in six models, ranging from 900-MBH to 3,000-MBH inputs. The flexible-watertube design provides fast internal circulation and eliminates damage from thermal shock and stresses caused by poor or unequal internal circulation. Low NOx Condensing Boiler
AERCO has re-designed its two-million BTU/hour Benchmark 2.0 Low NOx condensing boiler to reduce its footprint (79"H x 28"W x 36"D), electrical consumption (120V) and gas pressure requirements (4") while maintaining unmatched 20:1 turndown to maximize fuel savings. Engineers and contractors can employ the environmentally-friendly, high-efficiency boiler in a wider variety of hydronic heating applications due to the new design. Protect valves and condition flow from the pump – Free White Paper
Condition flow immediately as it leaves the pump. Stop turbulence from damaging valves, creating valve chatter, damaging valves, and impacting the balance in your engineered pipe system. The Vane Flex is a simple flow conditioning joint installed immediately after the pump that immediatly smooths flow exiting the pump so it enters the valve with a flat velocity profile. It allows you to make even more compact designs while maintaining the integrity of your design. Click here for free white paper.
