HVAC Systems and Equipment Focus of 2016 ASHRAE Handbook

June 21, 2016
Revisions in the 2016 ASHRAE Handbook – HVAC Systems and Equipment include major updates related to thermal storage and district heating and cooling.

Revisions to the majority of chapters, including major updates related to thermal storage and district heating and cooling, are included in the newly published 2016 ASHRAE Handbook – HVAC Systems and Equipment.

“Nearly 90 percent of the chapters have undergone revision since the 2012 volume was published,” Forrest Yount, volume chair, said. “That means there is a lot of new material for users to become familiar with. Many chapters have incorporated the results of recent research projects funded by ASHRAE.”

Chapter 12, "District Heating and Cooling," has new content from ASHRAE research project RP-1267 (the new “District Heating Guide” and “District Cooling Guide”), while Chapter 51, "Thermal Storage," has new content on grid reliability, renewable-power integration, heat storage, emergency cooling, water treatment, and commissioning.

Other updates likely to impact many users include extensive revisions related to system leakage and air-dispersion systems in Chapter 19, "Duct Construction"; updates for current technology and efficiency requirements in Chapter 33, "Furnaces"; and new information on U.S. regional appliance-efficiency standards in Chapter 49, "Unitary Air Conditioners and Heat Pumps."

Other revisions and additions include:

  • A new section on economic evaluation and an update on EU Directive 2004/8/EC in Chapter 7, "Combined Heat and Power Systems."
  • New content on waste-heat recovery, district applications, and industrial-process heat pumps in Chapter 9, "Applied Heat Pump and Heat Recovery Systems."
  • New sections on modeling and system commissioning and an updated system-design example in Chapter 18, "Variable Refrigerant Flow."
  • Updates for current technology, with new information on specialized components and air curtains, in Chapter 20, "Room Air Distribution Equipment."
  • New sections on series fan operation and field performance testing and added content on fan- and motor-efficiency grades and parallel multiple-fan operation in Chapter 21, "Fans."
  • New content on psychrometrics, outdoor air, controls, and industrial dehumidifiers in Chapter 25, "Mechanical Dehumidifiers and Related Components."
  • New information on heat pipes and desiccant and heat-wheel systems in Chapter 26, "Air-to-Air Energy Recovery Equipment."
  • Revisions related to standards, controls, and the selection of fans for makeup-air units in Chapter 28, "Unit Ventilators, Unit Heaters, and Makeup Air Units."
  • New data on worldwide solar-technology use and an expanded section on photovoltaic equipment in Chapter 37, "Solar Energy Equipment."
  • Revisions related to general theory, screw and scroll compressors, and bearings in Chapter 38, "Compressors."
  • Revised content on refrigerant selection and global-warming potential in Chapter 43, "Liquid-Chilling Systems."
  • New content on vertical inline split-coupled pumps; hydronic-system pump selection; and differential-pressure control in Chapter 44, "Centrifugal Pumps."
  • Updates on standards, bearing currents, and permanent-magnet motors in Chapter 45, "Motors, Motor Controls, and Variable-Frequency Drives."
  • New content on control-valve sizing, electronic actuators, and ball, butterfly, flow-limiting, and pressure-independent control valves in Chapter 47, "Valves."

The 2016 ASHRAE Handbook is available in a bound print volume and in electronic format on CD-ROM and online in two editions: one using inch-pound (I-P) units of measurement, the other using the International System of Units (SI).

The cost of the bound print volume, which includes the CD-ROM, is $209 in I-P or SI. The cost of the CD-ROM, which contains both the I-P and SI editions, is $189.

The 2016 ASHRAE Handbook also is available as one of the four current volumes included in ASHRAE Handbook Online. Members can subscribe for $33 and get immediate searchable access to I-P and SI versions of all four volumes.
