Outstanding Achievements Recognized at 2014 ASHRAE Annual Conference

Eighty-nine people were recognized for their contributions to ASHRAE and the built-environment industry during ASHRAE’s 2014 Annual Conference in Seattle.

Eighty-nine people were recognized for their contributions to ASHRAE and the built-environment industry during ASHRAE’s 2014 Annual Conference, being held June 28 to July 2 in Seattle.

Presidential Member Kent Peterson, PE, Fellow ASHRAE, ASHRAE-Certified Building Energy Assessment Professional, is the recipient of the Louise and Bill Holladay Distinguished Fellow Award, given to an ASHRAE Fellow for continuous preeminence in engineering or research work. Peterson is vice president and chief engineer, P2S Engineering, Long Beach, Calif.

Ken Cooper, PhD, Fellow ASHRAE, Life Member, is the recipient of the Andrew T. Boggs Service Award. The award recognizes a Distinguished Service Award recipient for continuing unselfish, dedicated, and distinguished service. Cooper is retired and lives in Seven Valleys, Pa.

The Exceptional Service Award recognizes Distinguished Service Award recipients who have continued to serve faithfully and with exemplary effort. Twenty-three individuals were recognized:

Daniel Nall, PE, FAIA, ASHRAE-Certified Building Energy Modeling Professional and High Performance Building Design Professional, and Robert Sedlak, PE, received the Journal Paper Award for their article, “Total Dissolved Solids in Reclaimed Water,” judged the best article published in ASHRAE Journal. Nall is senior vice president, Thornton Tomasetti, New York, N.Y.; Sedlak is senior vice president, WSP, New York, N.Y.

Christopher Healey, PhD, Zachary Pardey, James VanGilder, PE, and Xuanhang Zhang are the recipients of the Crosby Field Award. Their paper, “A Compact Server Model for Transient Data Center Simulations,” was judged the best paper presented before ASHRAE. Healy is a senior research engineer, Schneider Electric, North Billerica, Mass.; Pardey is an energy-systems engineer, Schneider Electric, Waltham, Mass.; VanGilder is director of indoor environmental modeling, Schneider Electric, Andover, Mass.; and Zhang is a senior mechanical engineer, Schneider Electric, Billerica.

The following were selected to receive Technical Paper Awards, which recognize the best papers presented at ASHRAE conferences:

  • Michel Bernier, PhD, PE, and Parham Eslami Nejad, PhD, for “A Preliminary Assessment on the Use of Phase Change Materials Around Geothermal Boreholes.” Bernier is a professor, Polytechnique Montreal, Montreal, Canada; Nejad is a post-doctoral researcher at Conmet ENERGY, Natural Resources Canada, Varennes, Quebec, Canada.
  • Darin Nutter, PhD, PE, Fellow ASHRAE, and Warren Long for “Distribution Map of Multi-Walled Carbon Nanontubes in a Refrigerant and Oil Mixture Within a 2.5 ton (8.8 Kw) Unitary Air Conditioner.” Nutter is a professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, Ark.; Long is an engineer, Bad Boy Mowers, Batesville, Ark.
  • Darryl Dickeroff, David Faulkner, Will Turner, PhD, and Iain Walker, PhD, Fellow ASHRAE, for “Energy Implications of In-Line Filtration in California Homes.” Dickerhoff is a principal research associate, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Berkeley, Calif.; Faulkner, Lafayette, Calif., is retired from Lawrence Berkley National Laboratory.; Turner is a research fellow, Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland; Walker is a group leader, residential building systems, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Berkeley, Calif.
  • David Herrin, PhD, PE, Tianxiang Li, PhD, and Limin Zhou, PhD, for “Measurement and Simulation of Acoustic Load Impedance for Boilers.” Herrin is an associate professor, University of Kentucky, Lexington, Ky.; Li is associate research professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Kentucky, Lexington, Ky.; Zhou is an acoustics test engineer, Akustica Inc., Bosch Group, Pittsburgh, Pa.

Paul Glanville, PE, received the Willis H. Carrier Award, which is given to an ASHRAE member 32 years of age or younger for presenting an outstanding paper at an ASHRAE conference. The award is presented for “Short-Term Performance of Gas-Fired Tankless Water Heater: Laboratory Characterization.” Glanville is a senior engineer, Gas Technology Institute, Des Plaines, Ill.

Heather Schopplein, PE, received the Chapter Programs Star Award, which recognizes excellence in chapter program endeavors. Schopplein is an engineer, Haldeman Inc., Los Angeles, Calif.

Lee M. Huffines, PE, received the Dan Mills Technical Award. The award recognizes a Chapter Technology Transfer Committee chair who excels in meeting goals in technical, energy, and government activities. Huffines is project manager/engineer, Commissioning WorCx, Jamestown, N.C.

Bruce Flaniken, PE, Life Member, received the Lou Flagg Historical Award, which recognizes an individual for preparing the most outstanding historical presentation. Flaniken is manager of design and construction engineering, Houston Methodist Hospital, Houston, Texas.

Sitaraman Chandra Sekhar, PhD, Fellow ASHRAE, received the Environmental Health Award, which recognizes excellence in volunteer service focused on environmental health issues. Sekhar is a professor, Department of Building, National University of Singapore.

Ryan Tanner, PhD, received the Homer Addams Award, which honors a graduate student who has been engaged in an ASHRAE research project. Tanner is a senior consultant, Navigant Consulting, Boulder, Colo.

Max Sherman, PhD, Fellow ASHRAE, received the Standards Achievement Award, which recognizes exceptional service in the area of standards leadership and technical contribution. Sherman is a senior scientist, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Berkeley, Calif.

Jared Larson, P.Eng., received the Student Activities Achievement Award, which recognizes a chapter student activities chair for service related to the goals and growth of student activities. Larson is a consulting engineer, MacPherson Engineering, Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada.

Ezekiel Bakare, Engr., received the Lincoln Bouillon Award, which recognizes a member who performs the most outstanding work in increasing the membership. Bakare is managing partner, Adeoye Bakare Partners, Ikeja, Lagos, Nigeria.

Ken Stoppel received the William J. Collins Jr. RP Award, which recognizes the chapter RP chair who excels in all activities supporting the campaign. Stoppel is president, Building Controls and Services Inc., Wichita, Kan.

Bin Yang, PhD, received the Ralph G. Nevins Physiology and Human Environment Award, which is given to a researcher under the age of 40 for significant accomplishments in the study of bioenvironmental engineering and its effect on human comfort and health. Yang is a post-doctoral research fellow, Berkeley Education Alliance for Research, Singapore.
