Energy-Recovery Ventilation: an Overview of a Critical Technology for High-Performance-HVAC-System Design
Wednesday, March 26, 2 p.m. ET
Sponsored by SEMCO
The subject of energy-recovery ventilation is filled with myths and disinformation. To be viable in an energy-starved future, HVAC systems must efficiently process ventilation and make productive use of low-grade energy resources ignored or discarded by conventional HVAC strategies. That means air-to-air energy-recovery technologies will be critical and central elements of high-performance HVAC systems that achieve cost-effective "net-zero" building design. As such, they will revolutionize HVAC-system design. Air-to-air energy-recovery technologies take numerous forms, each offering unique capabilities that are superior for specific applications. Each also has unique limitations, and there are challenges to their effective application. The HVAC industry is only beginning to learn how to use these important technologies...[MORE]
ASHRAE High-Performance Building-Design-Professional Certification Now Available
The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers' (ASHRAE's) new certification program, High-Performance Building Design Professional (HBDP), will launch this summer. ASHRAE developed the HBDP program in collaboration with the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and the Green Building Initiative (GBI). Candidates who earn the HBDP certification will have demonstrated an understanding and knowledge of how HVACR design is integrated into high-performance buildings to achieve the overall goal of producing a sustainable HVACR design. The first exam will take place June 25 during ASHRAE's 2008 Annual Meeting, which will be held June 21-25 in Salt Lake City. Exams at testing centers around the world will become available in the fall...[MORE]
Laboratory Methods of Testing Fans for Certified Aerodynamic Performance Rating
The Air Movement and Control Association International (AMCA International) announced that the Board of Standards Review of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) approved ANSI/AMCA Standard 210-07-ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 51-07, Laboratory Methods of Testing Fans for Certified Aerodynamic Performance Rating. This standard establishes uniform methods for laboratory test of a fan or other air-moving device to determine its aerodynamic performance in terms of airflow rate, pressure developed, power consumption, air density, speed of rotation, and efficiency for rating or guarantee purposes...[MORE]
Nanotechnology Makes Clean, Efficient Conductor
Research teams from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Boston College have discovered thermoelectric materials that could lead to cleaner, more efficient refrigerators, solar power plants, exhaust systems, and other devices...[MORE]
OSU 4-H Building Designed With Green Blueprints
The Ohio State University (OSU) built a new 4-H center without any air conditioning, running water for its urinals, or a furnace. The 4-H building uses a geothermal system that pumps 5,000 gal. of water through a loop of pipe that stretches through 72 holes drilled 280 ft into the ground. Also, large windows let natural light into 75 percent of the building, and motion sensors control the lights. The building is expected to use 280,750 gal. of water a year with low-flow sink faucets, toilets that adjust water use, and no-water urinals...[MORE]

HPAC Engineering Introduces Commissioning Green Buildings Event Introducing CGB
New EGB 2008 Website Now Live! Visit www.egbconference.com, the 2008 Engineering Green Building (EGB) Conference and Expo Website, for details on this year's EGB event. The site will be updated regularly as sponsors, exhibitors, sessions, and speakers are confirmed. HPAC Engineering's EGB 2008 will be held Oct. 21 and 22 at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. As the only green-design event focused on green-engineering applications as they apply to mechanical systems for commercial, industrial, and institutional buildings, EGB 2008 is a must-attend event for mechanical engineers and buildings professionals who design and specify HVAC systems for non-residential buildings. Green design has become the way business is done in today's energy-conscious environment, and EGB 2008 will offer how-to sessions that will help systems designers and building owners understand how to be more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly. Register for EGB 2008 by April 15 and receive a free copy of "The Green Building Revolution" by Jerry Yudelson, PE, MBA, LEED AP. Yudelson is a renowned green-building industry leader who has trained more than 3,300 building-industry professionals in the LEED rating system. He will deliver the keynote address, "What We Can Learn From European Green Building Design," for EGB 2008. Questions? Contact Conference Manager Jeff Ferenc by phone at 312-848-8405 or email at [email protected]. Event details will appear in the Engineering Green Buildings Newsletter and HPAC Engineering magazine as they become available. The Engineering Green Buildings Conference and Expo is produced and managed by HPAC Engineering. |
