USGBC Calls for a Higher Level of Federal Funding
Green Building Research Funding: An Assessment of Current Activity in the United States, a report published by the U.S. Green Building Council Research Committee, finds that the research related to high-performance green-building practices and technologies amounts to only 0.2 percent of all federally funded research, while building operations in the U.S. consume 40 percent of energy and 71 percent of electricity and are responsible for 38 percent of CO2 emissions. Comparison of Two Environmental Assessment and Rating Systems
Green Building Systems: A Comparison of the LEED and Green Globes Systems in the U.S. reports findings made by a team of independent researchers at the University of Minnesota. Green Path Causing Controversy in California
The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power's proposed energy corridor, to bring nonpolluting power to Los Angeles, could involve the erection of power lines and transmission towers through a national forest, two desert wildlife preserves, and a rustic hamlet used in westerns. Colorado State University to Build Wind Farm
Colorado State University (CSU) plans to convert its Fort Collins campus to 100-percent wind power. Five Addenda Open for Review: Outdoor Air Cleaning Proposed as Requirement for ASHRAE 62.1
ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 62.1, Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor Air Quality, sets minimum ventilation rates and other requirements for commercial and institutional buildings. Five proposed addenda to the standard are open for public review until April 30...[MORE]
- Addendum 62.1c, which adds air-cleaning requirements to section 6 of the standard.
- Addendum 62.i, which changes minimum outdoor airflow requirements for zones with environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) as described in Section 6.2.9.
- Addendum 62.1a, which addresses compliance issues that may result from unclear wording or phrasing in Section 5.
- Addendum 62.1b, which clarifies informative language in appendices C, D, and F.
- Addendum 62.1d, which adds the following occupancy categories to Table 6-1: kitchens, banks and bank lobbies, breakrooms, sorting, packing, light assembly, general manufacturing, and storage rooms (dry).
2007 ENERGY STAR Awards
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy recognized organizations on March 21 as winners of the 2007 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year Awards. Engineering Green Buildings Conference & Expo
HPAC Engineering has announced the dates and location of its fourth annual Engineering Green Buildings (EGB) Conference and Expo. Touted as the engineering event for green design in hospitality, education, and government buildings, EGB 2007 will be held Sept. 17 and 18 at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.
With its focus on hospitality, education, and government buildings -- key sectors for construction growth and green design -- EGB 2007 is expected to attract engineers, architects, mechanical contractors, and building owner/operators from around the country. The conference portion of this year's event will provide training on energy efficiency, water conservation, indoor environmental quality, and sustainability.
