Self-contained integrated cooling enclosures, InRow SC systems are useful for network-closet and server-room environments. The systems can be deployed as fully contained information-technology environments or added as a retrofit within an existing space. With up to 7 kw of cooling capacity, a 600-mm-wide rack enclosure, and front and rear containment options, the systems monitor and actively adjust cooling capacity to ensure proper server inlet temperatures. --APC |
For light-commercial applications, GeoTec geothermal heat pumps are suitable for open- or closed-loop applications. Available in 2- to 6-ton capacities, the heat pumps feature step-capacity scroll compressors, R410-A refrigerant, and variable-speed electronically commutated motors. Installation and service features include left- or right-side water connections, left- or right-hand control-panel access, slide-in electric heat packages, and simplified wiring. --Bard |
Triple-Flex high-efficiency condensing boilers feature flexible stainless-steel tubes, a minimum thermal efficiency of 90 percent with 160˚F return, and 180˚F supply at 100-percent firing load. Efficiencies of 99 percent are achievable with lower return-water temperatures. The boilers fire at 3,000-mbh input with less than 30 ppm of nitrogen oxide and utilize a hybrid metal-fiber burner with a 5-1 turndown ratio. --Bryan Steam LLC |
A compact portable combustion analyzer, the EN2 is housed in an aluminum frame and hard-side case. It measures up to four gases, such as oxygen, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide, and nitrogen dioxide, and includes probes for evaluating temperature and stack draft/pressure. An internal pump and peltier gas cooler with automatic condensate drain ensure proper sample conditioning. Standard features include an onboard printer, secure digital memory card, and wireless Bluetooth. Common applications include setup, maintenance, and emission monitoring of natural-gas, diesel, and oil-fired boilers and burners. --ECOM |
Compact and portable, the SAM-3 Soot-A-Matic cleaning system can be operated by one person to clean boiler firetubes. Soot and scale are removed as the system’s cleaning brush vacuums, traveling along a tube up to 24 ft at more than 2 fps. Interchangeable nozzles, stiff wire brushes, and scrapers are available to fit tubes from 1 3/8 in. to 4 in. --Goodway |
Brushless direct-current electronically commutated high-efficiency Vari-Green motors run off of a 115-v single-phase input. The motors are capable of operating at 20 to 100 percent (80-percent turndown) of full speed. The motors are available in ¼-, ½-, and ¾-hp sizes, as well as three control options: 0-to10-vdc input wiring, a motor-mounted dial, or a wall-mounted dial. --Greenheck |
Vane Flex flow-conditioning connectors reduce turbulence and straighten flow exiting a pump, eliminating valve flutter and reducing seat wear. They exceed flow-straightening values recommended by valve manufacturers. The connectors provide the same stress relief and vibration reduction in the same face-to-face as a standard pump connector and maintain the full range of movement in the same space as a standard connector. --Metraflex |
For central and northern locations, air-cooled chillers are available up to 350 tons with integrated free cooling for year-round heat load. Applications include data centers and other mission-critical applications. For southern and western locations, the chillers include simultaneous heat recovery. Applications include commercial buildings and process cooling/heating. --Motivair |
F-3500 insertion electromagnetic flow meters are engineered for demanding water-flow-measurement applications. With no moving parts, the F-3500 is useful even in challenging open-loop applications. The hand-insertable hot-tap design provides quick installation, and every meter is individually wet-calibrated, programmed for the specific application, and accurate to within 1 percent of rate. --Onicon Inc |
Boiler feed systems retrofit to existing boilers of up to 300 hp. Storage tanks range from 4- to 500-gal. capacities, and replacement storage tanks are made of 3/16-in. hot-rolled steel. Burks pumps range from 1/3 to 50 hp. --Rema Dri-Vac Corp. |
Engineered for use on cooling towers, condenser coils, rooftop units, dry coolers, and louvers, filter screens reduce cleaning of air intakes to a few quick swipes of a broom, brush, or shop vacuum or a rinse with a hose. Filters do not have to be removed for cleaning, avoiding thousands of dollars in downtime, lost productivity, and maintenance costs annually. --Air Solution Co. |
Series RWA high-temperature air-cooled pumps are designed for use with hot water, ethylene glycol, and propylene glycol. Eight pump sizes include capacities of up to 1,100 gpm, heads of up to 425 ft, pressures of up to 450 psig, and maximum temperatures of 400°F. The pumps include a shaft-mounted fan to provide airflow over the cooling fins. External water cooling for the bearings and mechanical seal is not required. --Dean Pump Division |
Self-contained continuous-blowdown heat-recovery systems do not require an air or power source. Flash is directed to the deaerator, and remaining heat is transferred to the makeup water with a brazed-plate heat exchanger. --Wilson Engineering |
The VSX line of double-suction vertical split-case pumps includes 43 models and sizes with capacities of up to 28,000 gpm. The pumps are available in three flange configurations. Standard features include alignment-friendly couplers, a groutless base plate, plug-and-play capabilities, and a hydraulically matched impeller and casing. --Bell & Gossett |
Biomass boilers |
The latest addition to Hurst’s biomass-boiler series is a reciprocating grate stoker with automated ash removal. The unit offers solid-fuel combustion, allowing mechanical replacement of fuel with the least amount of moving parts. The multifuel design is offered in various configurations to utilize a selection of solid fuels. The boilers are capable of burning wood, coal, bark, construction debris, nuts, shells, husks, paper, cardboard products, hog fuel, sawdust, shavings, sludge, and agricultural biomass. --Hurst Boiler |

Anatomy of a Package-Boiler Project By Jeff Guillot |
Primarily shop-assembled and shipped by rail, truck, or barge to their final destination, today's industrial-class watertube steam boilers often are called “package” units. The term “package,” however, can be misleading, creating the impression these boilers can be purchased “off the shelf,” installed, and used to produce steam in a matter of weeks. In reality, package-boiler projects often are years in the making, requiring coordination and great attention to detail. This article discusses all that goes into a successful package-boiler project.
