The Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute (ARI) recently announced the revision of ARI Standard 700-2004, Specifications for Fluorocarbon Refrigerants.

Standard 700-2004 specifies acceptable levels of purity of fluorocarbon refrigerants, regardless of source, and lists acceptable test methods. It is available for free download at


The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) recently announced the publication of ANSI/ASHRAE/IESNA Standard 90.1-2004, Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings.

According to committee chair Jerry White, Standard 90.1 underwent a “dramatic makeover” in an attempt to make it easier to use.

“New technical requirements and stringency levels are presented in a more consistent format, making them easy to find and apply to building designs,” White said.

Additions to the standard include an appendix for rating the energy efficiency of building designs that exceed the standard's minimum requirements. This, White said, should be beneficial to HVAC designers seeking Silver or Gold certification under the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design rating system.

Other changes to the standard include more-stringent interior-lighting power limits; a new exterior-lighting section; increased energy efficiencies for fans, single-package vertical units, and three-phase air-cooled air conditioners; and a reduced number of primary climate zones for heating and cooling and, thus, a reduced number of tables of building-envelope criteria.

The cost of Standard 90.1-2004 is $88 for ASHRAE members and $110 for non-members.

In related news, ASHRAE recently announced the publication of ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 140-2004, Standard Method of Test for the Evaluation of Building Energy Analysis Computer Programs.

Standard 140, which Standard 90.1 requires be used to evaluate the technical capabilities and range of applicability of computer programs that calculate the thermal performance of buildings and HVAC systems, now contains a test suite for the modeling of air-conditioning equipment.

The cost of Standard 140 is $67 for ASHRAE members and $84 for non-members.

In other news, ASHRAE recently announced the publication of ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 15-2004, Safety Standard for Refrigeration Systems.

Standard 15-2004 clarifies safety-relief-valve requirements for larger pressure vessels and prohibits the use of flammable refrigerants in human-comfort applications.

The cost of Standard 15-2004 is $29 for ASHRAE members and $37 for non-members.

Lastly, ASHRAE recently announced that the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) rejected a final appeal of Addendum n to ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 62-2001, Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor Air Quality.

Addendum n bases minimum outdoor-ventilation requirements on the number of people a space is expected to hold, as well as the space's floor area.


A 60-day public-comment period for the first draft of Version 2.2 of the U.S. Green Building Council's (USGBC's) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for New Construction Rating System (LEED-NC) will conclude Tuesday, Feb. 1, at 5 p.m. Pacific Standard Time.
