Vanderbilt University Builds Greener Campus
Vanderbilt University's three new residence halls achieved Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) gold certification. The college now has seven LEED-certified buildings at The Commons, the university's new campus for first-year students. Vanderbilt achieved Innovation in Design points by creating a free ride-to-work program with Nashville's Metro Transit Authority, using on-campus biodiesel vehicles, starting a green-housekeeping program, the utilization of 26.4-percent recycled content in construction, the diversion of converting more than 74 percent of demolition and construction waste from landfills, and by purchasing 53 percent of building materials regionally...MORE

ASHRAE Technology Awards Highlight Outstanding Building Projects
The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) recognized five technology-award winners of its Technology Awards this week at its winter conference in Chicago. The recipients have applied ASHRAE standards for effective energy management and indoor-air quality while designing a community center, a school, an office building, or a governmental building. Some of the winners applied elements of innovative building design to their projects by applying a heat recovery apparatus to preheat fresh air, using an HVAC system comprised of heat pumps connected to a geothermal loop to heat an ice rink, and utilizing a ground-water system used as a geothermal heating source and cooling sink...MORE
