By James Pettiford and Erin Sperry, Fulton Heating Solutions, Pulaski, N.Y.; Melissa Wadkinson, Fulton Thermal Corp., Pulaski, N.Y.; and Fabio Spreafico, Robur SpA, Zingonia, Italy

Condensing gas-fired hydronic boilers have become increasingly popular in commercial heating applications during the last 20 years. Several models of condensing boilers now have thermal efficiencies approaching 100 percent at low firing rates and return-water temperatures. However, the 100-percent level remains the fundamental efficiency limit for hydronic heating systems in the commercial-buildings sector. [MORE]

AHRI, HRAI Sign Cooperative MOU

The Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) and the Heating, Refrigeration, and Air-Conditioning Institute of Canada (HRAI) recently signed a memorandum of understanding on mutual cooperation and assistance in providing services to their respective members, many of whom are common to both associations. The agreement was signed by AHRI President and CEO Stephen Yurek and HRAI Chairman Gerry Cellucci during HRAI's annual meeting in Kananaskis, Alberta, Canada. [MORE]

ASHRAE Design Competition Gives Students Hands-On Experience

Engineering practices, such as building-information modeling (BIM), geothermal, and combined cooling, heating, and power, were highlighted in the winning entries of the 2010 ASHRAE Student Design Competition. [MORE]

ASHRAE’s 2011 Winter Conference to be Held in Las Vegas

The extravagant setting of Las Vegas will serve as a contrast to the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers’ (ASHRAE’s) 2011 Winter Conference theme of “A Safe Bet: Zero-Energy Design.” The conference will be held Jan. 29 to Feb. 2 at the Las Vegas Hilton in conjunction with the International Air-Conditioning, Heating, Refrigerating (AHR) Expo, which will run Jan. 31 to Feb. 2 at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The chatter you hear is your valves death rattle…Get the free white paper
It’s pretty simple, really. Condition flow immediately as it exits the pump while keeping pipe systems compact, quiet and energy efficient. This white paper shows how the Vaneflex conditions flow immediately. No worries about contractors sticking a valve too close to the pump. Un-tamed fluid turbulence exiting the pump is a primary cause of valve wear, valve chatter and an unbalanced piping system. Read the paper. See the study. Then start protecting your carefully designed piping system. Get your free copy of this white paper today.

Portable combustion analyzer
A compact portable combustion analyzer, the EN2 is housed in an aluminum frame and hard-side case. It measures up to four gases, such as oxygen, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide, and nitrogen dioxide, and includes probes for evaluating temperature and stack draft/pressure. An internal pump and peltier gas cooler with automatic condensate drain ensure proper sample conditioning. Standard features include an onboard printer, secure digital memory card, and wireless Bluetooth. Common applications include setup, maintenance, and emission monitoring of natural-gas, diesel, and oil-fired boilers and burners. Click here for more info.
