Working on Your Green-Building Education

A recent survey determined that engineers and architects want more information on the growing green-building initiative. Good news: Three educational opportunities to help expand your knowledge of green and sustainable buildings are coming up.

First is the 2008 International Air-Conditioning, Heating, Refrigerating Exposition (AHR Expo), which will be held Jan. 22-24 at Jacob Javits Convention Center in New York City. Attending the largest HVACR show in North America deserves serious consideration.

In addition to offering technical courses and sessions for which engineers can earn continuing-education units and professional-development hours, this year;s expo features in-depth sessions on green buildings. A host of technical experts will speak during a program called "Intelligent Sustainable Buildings" on Jan. 23. Many free green educational sessions also are scheduled, including "GreenSpeak: Understanding the Language and Concepts," "Greening the Big Apple With New Building Automation Ideas," and "The New LEED for Existing Buildings: Operations & Maintenance--Refined, Streamlined, and Scalable." Go to for more information.

Also coming down the line is another educational opportunity on sustainability featuring a powerhouse lineup of speakers. Carrier Corp.;s 10th Global Engineering Conference will be held April 9-11 at Caesar;s Palace in Las Vegas. The conference is cosponsored by HPAC Engineering. Rick Fedrizzi, president, chief executive officer, and founding chairman of the U.S. Green Building Council; Valentine A. Lehr, PE, senior partner, Lehr Consultants International; and Robert F. Fox, partner, Cook and Fox Architects, will be among the speakers.

The theme of the conference is designing and building for sustainability, with the goals of reducing environmental impact through decreasing the consumption of nonrenewable natural resources, minimizing waste, and creating healthy, productive environments. For more information, visit

Last, but not least, make plans to attend HPAC Engineering;s fifth annual Engineering Green Buildings (EGB) Conference and Expo, scheduled for Oct. 21 and 22 at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. EGB is a must-attend event for any mechanical-system engineer, building owner, or manager who has added green to his or her work lexicon. Read HPAC Engineering and visit in the coming months for details.
