HPAC 'On The Air': Updating ASHRAE Standards on Ultraviolet Testing, with Dean Saputa

April 21, 2022
*NEW PODCAST* Since the start of the pandemic, research has intensified on the use of UV light to treat air and surfaces. Now, new recommendations for the industry are not far off.

By necessity, the last two extraordinary years have seen our industry launch many parallel efforts to provide anxious public and private building owners with the best and most up-to-date scientific guidance available. The goal has been to develop and disseminate actionable recommendations that will both protect and reassure wary future operators and occupants of all building types on the subject of public health.

With that in mind, our guest this month is Dean Saputa, an HVAC industry veteran of more than 30 years, and vice president and co-founder of UV Resources, based in Santa Clarita CA. He helped to start that firm in 2005. Saputa also has been very active in ASHRAE, where he is a member of the ASHRAE Epidemic Task Force and past chair of the group's Technical Committee 2.9 on Ultraviolet Air and Surface Treatment.

He is the current chair of ASHRAE Standards Committee 185.2, which has been particularly active since the onset of the Coronavirus pandemic in early 2020. Our discussion here focuses on that committee's ongoing work, which is about to involve some significant, fast-tracked updates.
