NEMA Expands Certification Program to Connected Buildings

ARLINGTON, VA, August 7 — The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) has expanded its Make It American™ certification program to include a new product specification for connected building systems and equipment. These integrated hardware and software platforms, such as HVAC, building automation, and security platforms, are essential technologies for optimizing infrastructure resiliency and performance in the built environment.
NEMA’s Make It American program supports domestic manufacturing by helping companies demonstrate that their manufacturing processes, facilities, and supply chain management systems have undergone rigorous third-party expert audits to meet Build America, Buy America Act (BABA) domestic content rules – providing greater certainty and confidence to manufacturers, government agencies, and procurement officials seeking to source materials with enhanced levels of U.S.-manufactured content.
Connected systems and controls enable smarter, safer, and more efficient buildings across the U.S., supporting energy optimization in transit hubs, operational reliability in water treatment facilities, and occupant comfort in schools, hospitals, and government buildings. By certifying that these systems meet BABA domestic content requirements, NEMA’s program empowers public and private sector leaders to make infrastructure investments that are both high-performing and aligned with American industrial policy.

NEMA’s Make It American certification program is a comprehensive initiative that includes precedent-setting standards, certifications, and resources to help electrical manufacturers navigate domestic content requirements. Companies that successfully complete the certification audit are granted marks to showcase their rigorous supply chain processes, commitment to transparency, and enhanced domestic manufacturing footprint.
Other product specification certifications are currently available for low-voltage power distribution equipment (LVDE), high- and medium-voltage distribution equipment (HMVDE), and wire and cable.
